Both types of exercise are important. It’s sad to see an obese person with a joint or bone injury that prevents their ability to exercise and limits their ability to prevent insulin resistance and subsequent metabolic syndrome.
Obese people have a high fracture rate. (Manias K, et al. (2006). Bone. 39:652-657.) The benefits of exercise are short-lived, and thus exercises must be done frequently and regularly in order to maintain their beneficial effects. Exercise will restore your cells to a higher level of health, with efficient mitochondria and increased function.
As mentioned previously, exercise and diet can eliminate metabolic syndrome. You now have the “basic scientific knowledge” of how your body works. Would you like to know more? Do you want to know how to look and feel younger?
How to be Strong, Robust and Healthy
In this chapter, we’ll discuss what science can tell us about muscle building. The assumption is that muscle strength at any age increases your activity level and improves your quality of life. In the “tennis ball theory of life,” the more the ball is hit over the net, the less fuzz is left on it. For our purposes, “hitting the ball” is analogous to the stresses of life, and the resulting reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage your DNA is “less fuzz.”
So, how do we get more fuzz on the ball? We can do this by building more muscle with resistance exercises and by using the correct supplements and nutrients.
Exercise Will Lengthen Your Life and Improve Your Health
There is objective data indicating that exercise will lengthen your life span. (Mouaz H, et al. (2014). Cl Cardiol. 37 (8):456-461.) The data is positive for all age groups, with results being most pronounced in men over 60 years of age. Vigorous exercise is even more beneficial. (Lee IM, et al. (1995). JAMA. 273(15):1179-1184.) This may appear to be obvious and logical, but it was not objectively proven until 1995.
The information in this book introducing you to exercise and disseminating knowledge regarding the body is based on scientific data. By implementing your new-found knowledge, you’ll be able to change the way you look and feel.
Exercise will affect, in some way, every cell in your body. Your body will change when stressed, and will adapt. This is referred to as Specific Adaption to the Imposed Demand (SAID). (Oxford Dictionary of Sports Medicine (1998). Michael Kent.) This is what exercise does. What form of exercise you choose will depend upon you—your abilities, your motivation, and your goals—just you.
Your body needs energy constantly, whether at rest or while exercising. We discussed this in the section on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and mitochondria. The mitochondria are independent parts of the interior of cells, and they use oxygen and glucose to produce energy in the form of ATP.
Mitochondria are the “engines” inside cells. As mentioned earlier, when you increase your exercise, your muscle cells adapt by increasing the number of mitochondria and produce more ATP. When this occurs, you burn fat, and your muscles produce more force. You are now on your path to a healthy lifestyle.
